In addition to field restoration, we also partnered with Olimpico Learning, a nonprofit educational organization, to bring hands-on STEM workshops to K-12 students at Title 1 schools in East San Jose.
This summer we focused on air quality, astronomy, and healthy eating. We built wind vanes and discussed the concept of air flow and effects on air quality. Studies show that marginalized populations bear the heaviest burden of environmental degradation due to having fewer resources to adapt to pollution and extreme weather. Learning the science behind these issues will help empower these students to drive environmental justice for their own community through advocacy and innovative equitable solutions. We also hope to foster curiosity in Earth and environmental science beginning at a young age by engaging learners in project-based lessons relevant to the their every day lives.
